On one occasion, I even asked for it to be bought, but was promptly denied, on the grounds that it was too simple. “In this price, you can easily get a Mysore silk or a nice Kanjeevaram which you can wear for a wedding. Where will you wear this”? End of story..
He was in the service for 22 years and retired as a W 2 officer. They spent the Navy years in Key West, Connecticut, Virginia, and Kansas before settling in Evansville around 1962. They attended Holy Redeemer Church with their four children: Joe, John, Jim and Missie.
Interestingly, for the first time in a while, there is suddenly an abundance of available space on the prized stretch of Bleecker Street between Christoper and Hudson Streets. As it happens, the new Christofle store is currently flaked by the empty former homes of Lulu Guinness and Jack Spade. Ten years after most of the street longtime independent tenants were ousted in favor of more glamorous fashion brands, leases are coming up for renewal at dramatically increased rents, but where available storefronts were once snapped up as fast as they came up, they now linger.
I was cognizant of the fact that the land that is currently property (although we have a mortgage which we pay the bank) is Patawomeck land that was taken by British settlers and later became a plantation. The land was farmed by enslaved African American people while it was a plantation. The house has been returned to its original look, with the lemon yellow trim, although the exterior could use a new coat of paint. The master bedroom, which later owners had converted to a kitchen, is a bedroom once more. The original French wallpaper, which Frew bought from Philadelphia, covers walls in three rooms.
This coming Saturday is Veterans Day for our country. I wish I had better information about my ancestors. OK better information would be nice to have! I know that none of my grandparents were in the service. “No one was Safe, not even us Children”‘The Irish lads were always sitting on the roofs of Kirwan Street waiting for the Tans to come down the road. It’s just like yesterday, I can see them now. You see the Tans were stationed in McKee Barracks so we were thick with them..
Dee, a Filipina with thick, black hair that hangs far beyond her waist, conducts us in “Did You Think to Pray.” The conducting is somewhat idiosyncratic but everyone knows what she means, so no one really looks. She works in a company that sends money abroad, and she sometimes comes to church in her crisp, smart air hostess type uniform. In this country, where one of the biggest segments of the population is the immigrant worker, Dee sees a lot of money leaving the country, sometimes in pitifully small amounts.
