Using data from the Canadian Community Health Survey collected between 2008 and 2012, this study explores the relationships between individual level social capital and illicit drug use and dependence. The results showed that when controlling for relevant socio demographic and socioeconomic factors, the influences of network size and marital status on prevalence of illicit drug use were significant and varied by type of drug, while social support showed a consistent protective effect. When measuring drug dependence, all three dimensions of social capital measured in this study showed protective effects.
The Royal Society of London Journal reported this plague and wrote for the space of 200 miles they poisoned and destroyed all the trees of that country; there being found innumerable little holes in the ground, out of which those insects broke forth in the form of maggots, which turned into flyes (sic) that had a kind of taile (sic) or sting, which they stuck into the tree, and thereby envenomed and killed it. Thus, the misnomer of the truth about these insects is even more amazing than the folklore. They are working to understand the pre pottery society that existed there some 10,000 years ago, says Angela von den Driesch, a professor of zoology at Munich University, and “to determine the exact moment of the transition from hunter gatherer to agriculturalist.” What prompted these ancient people to spearhead mankind’s first revolution the so called Neolithic miracle turning from the upland forests that had long provided sustenance to the very beginnings of lowland settlement and agriculture, the domestication of plants and animals? “Humans always react to problems and catastrophic events,” says von den Driesch.
