Carnelian is found in
England, Australia, Oregon USA and India. It is a member of the agate
family, a chalcedony. The name is derived from the Latin word ‘carnis’
(of the flesh). It is an exquisite, translucent rich, deep orange/red
gemstone, which has a similar look and feel to garnet but has warmer
tones. Carnelian is believed to encourage
friendship and cheerfulness, to protect the wearer from evil, to ground
energies and concentration and to strengthen family love. It is used to
help promote understanding and vigour and overcome negativity, encourage
confidence, creativity and passion, to bring wisdom and combat depression
and sluggishness. Traditionally this gemstone is also said to be helpful
for lower spine problems, checking bleeding and relieving menstrual
cramps, rheumatism, infertility or impotence and for strengthening the
