Myrna Shoa - Artist & Storyteller

Myrna Shoa studied painting at the Royal College of Art and has made art her way of life since that time, as a designer, painter and illustrator.

For the last ten years she has been painting and selling her art  prints or as greetings cards from her shop in London’s Portobello Road. Now she sells from her online gallery. They are unlike any other prints or cards you have seen. They are like visual poems; strong in colour and design; works of art on a print or card. They appeal to people from different cultures and age groups.

Myrna Shoa’s fine art training comes across in the painterly qualities of her designs. Her work has a strong poetic narrative content, a story is implied but not stated. Myrna taught colour theory tone and composition at Blackheath School of Art and other Further Education colleges.

Myrna Shoa describes how she arrives at her evocative images "When I experience something I see an image a shape. I quickly draw it, capturing the mood or emotion in the lines and tones.’ She then uses the power of composition to work out the best way to convey what she wants. "If I want to suggest movement, I make the main parts of the compositions diagonal, held together by horizontals,’ she explains. It is her colour and composition, playing with scale that gives the work a power and tension.

Myrna Shoa, as well as being an is an artist is a storyteller with an unique insight into the secrets of the heart. She is an experienced story telling workshop leader and was a member of the College of Storytellers. In May 2005 she had her illustrations published in four books by Avanti press. They were co-written with Hazel Riley.  Myrna has illustrated a book of stories, which accompanied an exhibition of modern stained glass artist John Patsalides. Many of her card designs have been published by The Almanac Gallery and she has had her work shown alongside Lucian Freud and Frank Auerbach at The Herbert, Coventry, 'True To Life', part of

The New British Realists

More about Myrna ...

What inspired you to paint and how old were you when you started?

As a small child I always drew. I was 'good at art'. I was inspired, and am still inspired by trying to capture some experience about being alive, as well trying to capture the marvellous colours of everything around us in our world.

Who are your favourite painters?

Marc Chagall, and Rembrandt

Name three ideal careers for you?

Designing and making what I do now, as it gives me a voice.  Also teaching people who want to learn but need to find tools to help them on their way. I teach Adult Literacy. Setting up a project in some part of the world that is helpful to the community there and is educational/useful, and doesn't harm the environment.

What other kinds of work have you done?

Teaching Art/literacy. Running discussion groups/creative thinking courses. Running my own fashion business. Storytelling

Tell us about your favourite places

Andalusia in Southern Spain, the mountain villages, and Granada. Cordoba and Seville.

What is creativity all about for you?

Making contact with life, and making something happen that wasn't there before, making life.

Tell us about your working day

Designing, painting, drawing, selling, computer work.

What do you like to do on holidays?

Paint and walk, find out about the culture/people there, and recently I have done a weeks intensive Spanish course in Spain.

What kinds of music do you like?

At the moment I am listening to Afro/Cuban music/Salsa, etc.

"The original art-work is based on love and relationships,
either with yourself another person, or with the world."
