Jane Horwood

Web Designer

I set up Catfish Web Design in 1999 not long after my son was born so I could work from home and have a more 'flexible' working life.

Learning the technology as well as establishing a new business, particularly in such a competitive field, was very demanding - a steep learning curve, but well worth the struggle. I now have a thriving agency based just outside Cambridge.

Over the years I have reinvented myself many times - as clothes designer (even selling to Harrods), painter and decorator, freelance PA/administrator and a cook in a small restaurant. I also ran a theatre and set up my own production company.

In web design, I feel I've eventually found my niche. My sites are clean, fresh and user friendly. I work on a wide range of projects and love the diversity of this. One day may find me working on a site for a vintage-inspired boutique, the next for a bio technology company. It's a rich mix.

For me it's not just about the technical side of designing and developing websites though. It's about helping people add value to, and promote, their business.

When I relocated from London to Cambridge several years ago I needed to establish myself in the area so I hit upon the idea of setting up a business networking lunch club for women. I wanted something informal that would attract women like me. It's been a great success and through the lunches, not only have I made wonderful personal friends, but I've developed a wide network of contacts who offer complementary services to my web design.

It's great to be able to pass work to other people. It also means that I can point my clients to people that I know are reliable and good at what they do. I'm sure this is an invaluable service to people just starting out in business, and it's also great for the local business community.

I'm a bit of a workaholic but I love what I do. However, the ambition is to live by the sea - definitely with a sea view. The good thing about my job is that I can do it anywhere! The only problem may lie in becoming a bit 'long in the tooth' for all this cutting edge technology.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you'd like to find out more about web design.
