"So often people tell me they are not artistic and when I question them further I discover they would love to ‘have a go’, but were put off at school or believe that being creative means  you must be able to draw realistically. I believe creativity is a basic human need and to allow this need to flourish is a wonderful gift you can give to yourself. There are no rights and wrongs and although the end product can often turn out to be extremely pleasing, it is the journey taken when making art that is the important part."

Barbara Melling - Artist

Barbara works from her studio in rural Lincolnshire. Having studied sculpture and ceramics at Wimbledon School of Art, Barbara went on to train as an art therapist and for many years worked with both children and adults in different areas, including health and education. In 2003 she moved with her family to the East coast where she received funding from the Arts Council England to renovate an old blacksmith’s forge and set up the Old Forge Art Studio, where she works as a batik artist and holds short courses and workshops. www.theoldforgeartstudio.co.uk

Barbara has always had an interest in working creatively with materials and fabrics and in recent years has developed her work using batik. Batik is the decoration of cloth using hot wax and fabric dyes. As well as her unique silk scarves, Barbara makes batik pictures and wall hangings and is a member of the Batik Guild. Her wall hangings range from around 60cms x 30cms to 2 metres x 3 metres and are often made completely from recycled materials. All her work is for sale.

Barbara holds regular Batik Making Short Courses in her studio; these are available from one, two or three days and take place all year round.

Barbara also holds creative workshops where the aim is to re-generate creativity.

Some of the creative workshops held at the studio include ‘Woman’s Creative Workshop’ and ‘Self Discovery through Painting’. All the workshops have been designed using therapeutic ideas and thinking, they are not art lessons, but use innovative exercises to stimulate ideas and creative thought.  Participants are encouraged to focus on themselves, use a variety of art materials, enjoy their experience and above all have fun!

Barbara has also written a book ‘Creative Activities for the Early Years’ published by Brilliant Publications.
