Miss H Writes Fashion ....

Spring/Summer 2011

Spring is the season of new life and new beginnings where we can shrug off the shackles of winter and embrace the new year. If you fancy a change or just a new wardrobe, consider stocking up on a few essential pieces of clothing or jewellery to mix and match as the weather grows warmer.

Now the coats and scarves are packed away for next winter, my thoughts are turning to transitional items that will get me through the change of season, all the way through summer and up to the start of autumn. The shops are full of pretty florals and pastel colours, and if these floaty numbers are calling to you too then layering is the way forward. A key investment this season is a selection of loose summer dresses to form the cornerstone of your wardrobe. While the wind chill still bites, wear your dresses with tights or jeans, over long-sleeved tops and under cardigans.

A layered cardigan over a summer dress finished with a waist-cinching belt is casual and summery, and looks great with ankle boots or sneakers for a more relaxed feel. Faux leather is in all the shops at the moment, and nothing says relaxed rock-chick more than flower print frocks teamed with a black leather-look jacket. Finish with biker boots for the festival look. If florals aren’t your thing, the lightness can be replicated with a more nautical twist by going for thin coloured pinstripe fabric on a white or cream background. For an alternative to the tiny flowered patterns, darker coloured prints dotted with bold, bright flowers make an impact without being too girly.

Pastels are always in when spring comes around, but if they’re a bit too sweet for your taste, look out for sage greens or dusty pinks and lilacs. These outfits can be teamed with some classic, cool jewellery made with stones such as Jade, with its mellow greens, or Fluorite, a mix of calm, translucent lilacs and blues. These colours also look great with tans and greys.

If you want to add a bit of spring chic into your work wardrobe but can’t rock out the floral dresses in the office, try teaming high-waisted skirts and trousers with loose, pretty blouses tucked in or belted over your normal suit skirt or trousers.

As summer beckons, the layers can be shed and your multi-function wardrobe can go forward with the ever-popular gladiator sandal and strings of beads mixed with pendants like the summery calcite.  Even the plainest white t-shirt can be dressed up with sheer scarves in delicate colours or chunky bracelets and teamed with pretty handkerchief or flirty bias cut skirts.

Try something new this spring, and see how lightening your wardrobe can help you shake off those winter blues.
