Autumn Winter 2010/11

I don’t know about anywhere else, but in the UK summer still hasn’t really begun. Heedless of this, autumn approaches putting all thoughts of sun and warmth from our heads. The good thing about the cold weather, however, are the clothes. While in summer less is definitely more whether you like it or not, in winter you can really play with thickness, shape, layers and colour. Winter’s palette is vast, from the trusty blacks, blues and purples through to snow-princess pastels and whites.

As the leaves turn brown, banish the winter blues by releasing the animal inside! Accessorising with hints of animal print can release memories of warmer climes, bringing a touch of the exotic to the cold, grey streets.

Leopard print scarves and bags (or coats if you feel a lion-like bravery) can be teamed with stones like Amber and Red Jade to warm your skin-tone and set your print accessories alight.

My personal favourites as the cold sets in are the darker colours, namely black, royal blue and dark violet. These work beautifully together in layered tights, coats and jumpers, or alone as a striking theme for an entire outfit.

The darker colours can be beautifully dressed for the evening, in slinky statement dresses for the Christmas party. Match royal blue with Lapis Lazuli pendants for a look that screams elegance and sophistication. Also worth considering are Agate stones, which against a white outfit conjure images of fir trees in the snow.

If you are a pastel princess, for that just off the slopes look try the palest blue angora and mohair jumpers. These can be teamed with ethereal Quartz Crystals, or for a more natural look try Howlite.

For me, autumn/winter is all about the crisp cold freshness of the air outside, and the cosy warmth inside. Even while comfort reigns supreme throughout, simple accessories can jazz up the oldest and most boring of comfort garments.

Statement pendants can be worn over polo-necked jumpers and bright and chunky strings of beads work well even over jackets and coats. To inject that extra splash of personality into your trip to the supermarket, try wearing bracelets over gloves rather than beneath. And remember that ring you can’t wear because it’s too big? Slip it on over your glove, and enjoy winter all the more.

As the seasons when you wear more and more layers, autumn and winter offer an opportunity to experiment with colours and styles which summer doesn’t. When your eyes are disheartened by the dreariness outside, beautiful accessories and bright colours can lift your heart and lighten your mood.
