Miss H Writes Fashion .... Autumn/Winter 2011/12
There’s a chill in the air, but this year the milder weather is clinging on for longer than usual. Celebrate the last of the warmth by embracing the brightest of colour in your winter wardrobe. Gem-coloured separates were big on the catwalks this year, and the natural beauty of amethyst, emerald and ruby can brighten up even the greyest winter’s day. Try teaming a daring jacket with jeans or dark trousers and feel your surroundings heat up! Wool always looks great in bright colours and, in a colour you really love, can form the staple of your look this season. Faux fur is always a popular choice in winter, and this year you can stay snug, warm and on trend with the bright dyed coat trims and stoles. The catwalks were filled with fitted and belted winter jackets with luxurious faux fur trims in rich reds, violets and greens. If you’re feeling brave, you can truly embrace your love for gems with mixed and matched coloured separates. Worn with contrasting jewellery, you can really sparkle this Christmas! It isn’t just colours that you can mix up, and even with a plain black outfit, you can add interest with different textures. Try fur with wool, jersey with chunky knit. This will add instant trend-appeal to your outfit and means you can play with different silhouettes. Try thick, long jumpers with a faux fur gilet, and bulky cardigans with skinny belts over leggings. The gorgeous classic styles of the forties have never really gone away, and they’re back with a bang this season. You can team your faux fur collars with midi skirts with nipped-in high waists. This look works for work and can be jazzed up for evening wear by teaming with sequins and, of course, glittering gem-coloured brights. One of my main priorities this winter will be keeping warm, and happily, this season the cosy look is in. Big chunky knits are all over the high street, from cute sweater dresses to cabled maxi skirts. Thinner cardigans and preppy jumpers will work well with your forties-style skirts, and teamed with slouchy high-heeled boots, you’ll be stepping out in style whatever the weather brings. As Christmas approaches, treat those fashion-conscious family and friends with matching or contrasting gem gifts that will work with the gorgeous colours in the shops this season. Remember, for a more personal gift, search out birth stones and stones with meanings and symbolism that remind you of those you love.
