Was a small settlement which was established at the commencement of Colliery in 1888. It was situated to the Northwest of Road where it crosses the creek. The settlement was named after the Boer War battle of the same name. Lychee, or properly Litchi chinensis, is a tropical plant that’s native to parts of India, China, Taiwan, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Lychee is actually a member of the soapberry family. The fruits from the lychee tree are rather unusual looking.

The branches of a neighbor’s mature mulberry tree hang gracefully over the fence to my side of the garden. This year, there have been more berries than even the squirrels, birds and my husband can gather. Some were eaten raw. But I continue up the left fork in our road along the stream. A brown creeper calls and forages above the forks. The last quarter of a mile the road bank on my left harbors several patches of trailing arbutus, the shining, evergreen leaves a promise of the pink and white, sweetly scented flowers to come.

While UMM Medical Center is against use of elderberry during pregnancy, the American Botanical Council reports in “The ABC Clinical Guide to Elder Berry” that use of elderberry by pregnant women is not suggested solely on the basis of lack of research information.
